2 oz Pure Silver Coin – Niue Island 2020 – 5 Dollars
Vlad III Dracula/Vlad Tepes, better known as The Impaler, was a Wallachian prince and a ruthless leader, whose cruel methods of punishing his enemies gained notoriety in 15th-Century Europe. Vlad employed extremely cruel measures to inspire fear in those who opposed him and that’s where he earned his nickname famously by impaling his enemies on stakes, which does not kill immediately and is slow and painful. There were also stories told about Vlad drinking the blood of his enemies, where this later greatly inspired Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and its main character, Count Dracula, the vampire. As gruesome and terrifying as his methods were, Vlad is hailed as a hero, and credited for having kept the relentless Ottoman advance into Europe at bay in the 15th century.
This collectible features the feral eyes of Vlad the Impaler looking straight ahead, as he enjoys a dinner feast in the company of impaled enemies and victims behind him. The wild and unnerving look on Vlad’s face is arresting and captures one with intensity when held in hand. Deep lines on his face are shown with fine clarity on a super ultra-high relief to deliver his life-like appearance. The legal tender of Niue Island, the official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II sits within a pile of skeleton bones, finishing this piece with a sculptural touch.
Using a new minting technique called “Bi-Metal Plus”, 11.5 oz of copper is laid between two layers of 999 fine-silver totaling 2oz, resulting in a super high relief. This technique allows the coin to have an incredible weight and feel in the hand, with its 80mm diameter size and silver antiqued finishing.
